The title, “Sea Picture,” like many others from this series are taken from or variations of Edward Elgar’s “Sea Pictures,” a cycle of five songs composed in 1899.
The enigma of “Sea Picture” is that one is not sure if it is a simple memory of a vacation by the sea, with all the requisite foam and surf and the moiré effects of the moving tides, or perhaps it is something more ominous akin to the slowly rising sea levels related to climate change.
This smaller painting is empty of human presence though it’s view implies a human presence as witness.
