Updates from Cain's studio

  • Анна Каренина (Anna Karenina)

Hand-painted in Indian ink onto book pages from an antiquarian copy of Leo Tolstoy book, Anna Karenina, which is a Moscow published edition, from nearly 100 years ago. At first glance, the character seem to engage with the narrative printed on the pages as if she is an outside observer, mirroring you - the viewer of the artwork. Upon closer inspection though, the narrative written on the pages shines through the superimposed character and brings her alive as a reflection of the novel itself, transformed through the modern-day lens of the viewer. The work is beautifully mounted on quality canvas and robust sustainable wooden stretches.

    May Ball

    May Ball

Most recent work entitled 'May ball' was inspired by a coupe attending Trinity's May Ball, Cambridge University. "The tradition of May Balls in Cambridge started in the 1830s with the first official one being the First and Third Trinity Boat Club May Ball in 1866. It is thought they developed from the celebrations surrounding successes in the May Bumps - a set of rowing races which used to take place before the university tripos examinations in May each year. The balls and the other celebrations which make up May Week moved from May to June in 1882, and still take place in June, after examinations, but the name has been retained."

Side Profile of 'The Perfect Match'

"The perfect match" Inspired from a couple in Cambridge. The title was derived from the similar shapes formed in the couples clothing combined with the holding of hands which gives the feeling of a close relationship. I've take a photo of paintings side profile to clearly shows the books narrative along with the ink paintings subjects. Stuart James Cain
